Last night was our final program in the Performing Arts Series for this year at the auditorium here in town, and the season definitely went out with a bang. The show was a reenactment of, literally, one night in Memphis, when as just sort of a fluke, Carl Perkins was recording at Sun Studio there, and Jerry Lee Lewis was playing with him. As it happened, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley both stopped by the studio while they were there, and they all four just started jamming together. AND the engineer that had been recording kept the tapes rolling, so it was all recorded. Someone at the studio went and told the newspapers what was going on, so a photographer came over and took pictures of the event, and the next day the article in the paper had the headlines The Million Dollar Quartet – and that’s what they were known from then on. I had never heard that story before – and they told lots of other ones. Just such a fun, fun show, and the musicians were fantastic. I just wish the pictures had turned out better.
Mason’s Wednesday Track Meet
Wednesday Jeff & I were at Castle Heights Middle School in Rock Hill to watch Mase in action. I had absolutely poured down rain as soon as we got there, but it didn’t last too long, so the kids got out on the track pretty quickly. I got this picture of Mase running the 400 lap on the medley relay. They came in second on that event.
He tied for first in the high jump. With the rain both he and the boy he tied with didn’t jump as high as they normally would, and he said every time he hit the mat the water just sprayed out all over him :-), but we were still very proud. Of course,
Tuesday Track Meet
Tuesday Sherri met us at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill to see Adam in action in the pole vault. He did a great job – hit the 9′ mark again – and is getting closer and closer to 9’6″.
Art in Bloom
Sunday Meg & I left after church to head to the Columbia Museum of Art, to take in the annual Art in Bloom exhibit. Different garden clubs in the area are each assigned different paintings or other pieces from the museum’s collection – they literally draw numbers out of a hat – and the design and create a flower arrangement interpreting it. I have wanted to go to this for years, and this year we finally made it happen. Here are some pictures of one of my favorites. And the lady leading our tour was just amazing. Every piece was displayed on an identical column, but the vases and other parts of the display tied into the paintings, too – like this one was placed on a mirror, like the mirror in the painting. And all of those fresh flowers – amazing.
The display going up the banister of the staircase was a breathtaking way to begin the tour. Just lovely.
Little Eowyn
Saturday was our yard sale at church. It has sort of become a tradition that Sherri’s daughter Amber comes up and does some shopping, and we go out to eat to have some catching up time afterwards. I was so surprised and excited her daughter Rozzie & granddaughter Eowyn were with her this time – as well as her daughters Zoee & Kristin. Eowyn is maybe 20 months old, and just as cute as can be.
Mason’s Track Meet
Last Tuesday was Mase’s only home track meet of the season. He came in first in high jump in the three-way meet (5’1″) and then I got this picture waiting on the baton to run the 400 lap in the medley relay, where Clover came in second.
And this picture of him taking off on the anchor lap in the final event of the meet, the 4 x 400 relay. Clover came in first in that in a very exciting finish. Fun day.
Adam’s Pole Vaulting
Jeff was still on the way home from Indiana Wednesday afternoon when I met Andrew at Rock Hill High to see Adam compete in the track meet there. It was very exciting – he cleared 9′ in the pole vault to set a new PR. We were very proud and excited. Here are a couple of pictures.
Mason’s Tuesday Track Meet
Tuesday afternoon Jeff was still in Indiana, so I met Addie, Lee, & June at the Sullivan Middle School track in Rock Hill to see Mason in action. That is the school where we cheered Adam on so many times last year, and it did seem a little odd not to be yelling for the Falcons. It was absolutely freezing – so cold I didn’t even stay for the last event, when Mase run in the 4×400 relay. And we were sitting so far away from the high jump area that I couldn’t get any decent pictures. I did get this couple, though, of him running the 400 individual race. He did good, but I could tell he was freezing sitting on the infield between his events, too. Still, it was fun watching him in action
Heath’s First Birthday Party
Sunday afternoon Meg & I headed up to Mount Airy, to celebrate the first birthday of Zollie & Renee’s youngest grandchild, Olivia & Taylor’s son Heath. He is the absolute sweetest thing – even though it was kind of his nap time, he was so happy the whole time. He looked so cute decked out for St Patrick’s Day.
I love this picture of him with his mom and dad 🙂
