Things are starting to green up in our flower bed this spring – I love looking every day and see what is new that is blooming

There was a very nice, solemn ceremony when the remains arrived from Columbia in the late afternoon. On their way, they had been driven through Fort Jackson and then around every single school building between there and Camden, so the soldiers and students could pay their respects. There were the remains of 12 colonists, from Maryland and Delaware, and one from Scotland, The honor guard from Fort Sumter was so impressive. Just very moving, and very emotional for a lot of people.

The bodies were lying in state at the Kerhaw House, the mansion there at Historic Camden, and we all walked through to pay our respects – but of course no pictures were allowed inside. I got this one looking up while we were on the steps getting ready to go in. Such a special day.

I can almost trace my love of history to a book I was reading when I was maybe 11 or 12. I don’t remember what it was, but I can remember checking it out of the library at Reeves-Rogers Elementary School. It was set during the Revolutionary War, and there was a very minor character written about, a Baron DeKalb. I thought, Dekalb County is where my momma & daddy were from in Georgia, and I did a little bit more research – must more difficult in those pre-Google days, and found out that the county was in fact named after this same Baron Dekalb. That clicked somehow with me – the connectedness of things through the years – and I’ve loved history every since. Yesterday Mallory and I were at the Camden Battlefield, where Baron DeKalb was killed in action, and found this statue of him outside the museum.

Wednesday afternoon was the city wide track meet, & I got this picture of Adam running in the sprint medley – he runs the 400 leg. He absolutely hates to run, and never practices the running, but he can make it around the track, so they always stick him in one running event. He really seems like he has some natural talent, but he just doesn’t like it. What can you do? 🙂

I got this picture of him after all of his events were over, hanging on the fence and talking to his buddies. Love this kid.

Last week both of Clara’s soccer matches were against Rock Hill High School, the first in Rock Hill and the second at Clover. I thought that scheduling was odd, but what do I know? No action photos, but I did get this picture of our girl after the match – all smiles with another Clover victory 🙂 .
