Camden Burials

There was a very nice, solemn ceremony when the remains arrived from Columbia in the late afternoon. On their way, they had been driven through Fort Jackson and then around every single school building between there and Camden, so the soldiers and students could pay their respects. There were the remains of 12 colonists, from Maryland and Delaware, and one from Scotland, The honor guard from Fort Sumter was so impressive. Just very moving, and very emotional for a lot of people.

The bodies were lying in state at the Kerhaw House, the mansion there at Historic Camden, and we all walked through to pay our respects – but of course no pictures were allowed inside. I got this one looking up while we were on the steps getting ready to go in. Such a special day.
