Baron DeKalb

I can almost trace my love of history to a book I was reading when I was maybe 11 or 12. I don’t remember what it was, but I can remember checking it out of the library at Reeves-Rogers Elementary School. It was set during the Revolutionary War, and there was a very minor character written about, a Baron DeKalb. I thought, Dekalb County is where my momma & daddy were from in Georgia, and I did a little bit more research – must more difficult in those pre-Google days, and found out that the county was in fact named after this same Baron Dekalb. That clicked somehow with me – the connectedness of things through the years – and I’ve loved history every since. Yesterday Mallory and I were at the Camden Battlefield, where Baron DeKalb was killed in action, and found this statue of him outside the museum.

We also went & found the church where he was buried – not in a cemetery, but right in the front yard of the church. The monument was erected in 1825, and Lafayette came back to lay the cornerstone. Needless to say, my little history nerd and I loved that.

Wednesday Track Meet

Wednesday afternoon was the city wide track meet, & I got this picture of Adam running in the sprint medley – he runs the 400 leg. He absolutely hates to run, and never practices the running, but he can make it around the track, so they always stick him in one running event. He really seems like he has some natural talent, but he just doesn’t like it. What can you do? 🙂

I got this picture of him after all of his events were over, hanging on the fence and talking to his buddies. Love this kid.

Late Azaleas

Our early ones have come and gone, but our late azaleas have really come out in the past week. They are so pretty. Here are a couple of pictures.

Dance Competition at Concord

Last Saturday I headed to Concord, about an hour up the road, to see June in her dance competition. I didn’t get any pictures of her actually performing, but she did a great job. I did get this one of her when she came and sat down on the floor next to us to eat snacks between her dances :-).

Clover vs RHHS #2

Last week both of Clara’s soccer matches were against Rock Hill High School, the first in Rock Hill and the second at Clover. I thought that scheduling was odd, but what do I know? No action photos, but I did get this picture of our girl after the match – all smiles with another Clover victory 🙂 .

Discus

Last week’s track me’et had Adam scoring a PR in the discus at 102’7″, and he came in second. We were SO proud.

Soccer vs Rock Hill High

I texted a picture of Clara on the soccer field to my niece Lesley last week when we were at District 3 Stadium, & told her that the last time I watched RHHS on the soccer field was when she was playing maybe ten years ago. I still love that old stadium, though. Here is Clara in action – #24.

And getting ready to sub back in after she had a break in the action. Clover won big, so that was exciting.

Easter Part 2

Mallory was excited to show off the special egg her dad had decorated for her, once she had made her decision that she was attending USC Honors College next fall 🙂

They may have outgrown hunting eggs, but I have not – and so the tradition continues 🙂
