The final day of our birthday trip, last Monday, Lindee and I spent the entire morning visiting the churches in Glendale Springs and West Jefferson that are home to the beautiful Ben Long frescoes. I had not been to see them in decades, and they really are just gorgeous. This one was the centerpiece of St Mary’s Episcopal Church. So beautiful.
From there we went to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, which was a little bigger than St Mary’s, but still just a beautiful little white church in the mountains.
At Holy Trinity not only did they have the fresco upstairs, but downstairs in the church, in the columbarium, were other absolutely beautiful works of art. There were a couple of frescoes done by students of Ben Long’s, as well as other types of art, like this beautiful almost life size wood carving of Jesus in the wilderness. It was a perfect way to end our wonderful trip.
