Kings Mountain National Military Park

Last week I went out to Kings Mountain to walk around the trail and enjoy the absolutely beautiful weather. I thought there might be some green budding out in the woods, but you couldn’t really see it from the trail. With days like this, though, it surely won’t be long.

We have, of course, been walking the Battlefield Trail for 40 years, and always one of the highlights is Captain Ferguson’s grave. He was an officer of the Scottish troops that fought with the English during this Revolutionary War battle, and when he was killed there, his men buried him under this cairn of rocks, as was often the tradition in Scotland. The monument was erected much later, when feelings between the Americans and the British were much friendlier.
