Saturday in Highlands

While Charlotte & I were on our birthday trip, we stayed at Mitchell Lodge in Highlands, NC.  It’s an old lodge that has been in the same family since 1937, and was just lovely.  It was on a beautiful piece of property right outside of town – lots of open space to rest and relax in, including a Secret Place – a beautiful little gazebo/balcony type thing overlooking the mountain stream that ran through the progperty.  There are the steps that led down to it.  Plus the weather was absolutely gorgeous Saturday morning when we were out explroing.

We spent the morning out exploring the curvy mountain roads of the area, with the very loose goal of finding the World’s Smallest Post Office.  It took a while, but we finally lucked up on it.  Of course I loved reading the history of it that was displayed on its (very small) wall.

Fields of the Wood

Last weekend Charlotte and I went on our annual birthday trip to the mountains.  Our first stop on Friday was at the Fields of the Wood Bible Theme Park in Murphy.  It is built on the site where the Church of God of Prophecy was first established, which was interesting.  I got this picture of Charlotte in front of the Bible on top of Ten Commandments Mountain.  It really was pretty impressive.

We did not walk up the 380+ steps to the top of Ten Commandment Mountain, since we could drive there, but did walk up the 321 of Prayer Mountain.  There were these displays all along the steps.  On one side were different Biblical truths, and on the other were the steps in the reformation of the church, like this one.  Interesting, and thank goodness the steps were mostly in the shade.  It was a hot day.

Museum of Western York County

Last week I went with our Forever Young group from church on another great outing.  I have wanted to visit this place literally for decades, and I made it just in time – it’s closing the end of the month.  Just such a fun, folksy kind of place, celebrating the history of Western York County.  That is not technically Clver, ugh there was a bit about Clover in the displays.  One of my favorite areas was the kitchen displays – here are a couple of pictures.

Museum, Part II

Here are a couple of more pictures I got at the museum last week.  This was one of the most interesting displays there, I thought, because I had never heard of this program for unemployed youth, much like the CCC.  They had desks there that the boys in this program had made, and they were beautiful.  Much like the school desks we had in school, where the desk top was attached to the back of the chair – a little simpler in design, but I just thought this was so interesting.

I remember the Ruritan Club growing up in Murfreesboro, so thought this was interesting as well.

After the Match

I got this picture after Clover’s victory in straight games at the volleyball game Wednesday afternoon.  That’s Cheyenne with June, who also plays on Clara’s soccer team.  All smiles after an exciting victory!

Volleyball game

Yesterday was June’s first volleyball game of the season, and she did GREAT. After not getting in the first match, she got in both games of the second – Clover won in straight games – and she really played well. I got this picture of her being goofy on the bench before the games started.

In action during the second game. So proud.

Tuesday Pix

Yesterday Andrew and Lee came over to help Jeff pour concrete on the driveway project. Lee walked in front of Andrew just as I snapped this picture, & our neighbor Charles was waiting on me to go by to come back up with his tractor to help them, so I didn’t take time to take another. I’ll do better when they get to work on the other side.

Then last night was the first program of the season in the Performing Arts Series at the auditorium in town – The Depue Brothers Band. They were incredibly talented, & played everything from classical to bluegrass. Such a fun evening.

Volleyball!!!

Monday was kickoff for Clover Middle School’s volleyball season. June was so excited to have made the team, and even though she didn’t get in the game, she had a good time – and we had fun watching. I got this picture of her afterwards – the first time we’d see her in her uniform.

Driveway Progress

I finally had the camera with me AND remembered to take pictures of Jeff’ progress on the driveway.  Andrew & Lee are coming tomorrow afternoon to help him pour concrete.  Slow but steady…
